"If a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come" -- Doctrine & Covenants 130:19
What are the Academic Years?
When children reach the years of adolescence, their brains are transitioning into adulthood. Since the way their minds work are stretching and growing, youth should be challenged to read more difficult books, consider more complex ideas, and do hard things such as setting and working toward goals. At this point in their educational journey, we begin adding more classic novels as well as famous speeches, important documents, and influential essays. Poetry, songs, and even movies are also added to their assignments. We want them to become familiar with great works in all their various forms, and our prayer is that they will come to not only recognize, but appreciate them and use them in their own lives to become better students, citizens, and some day the best parents of their own children that they can be.

"Parents, … let your children be exposed to great minds, great ideas, everlasting truth, and those things which will build and motivate for good. … Try to create within your home an atmosphere of learning and the growth which will come of it." --Gordon B. Hinckley
